TBI stands for traumatic brain injury, which occurs when sudden force or trauma injures the brain. Most often, such injury is indirect: the trauma is blunted by the skull, but the brain is driven against the inside of the skull, causing injury to the soft tissue. This can happen in a blow, or through a whiplash or shaking motion. Either way, bruising, swelling, and, in some cases, even bleeding may result.
If the trauma is sufficient to damage the skull itself - as a crack or break - it is a "penetrating" head injury. More common and more difficult to diagnose are closed head injuries, which damage the brain but not the skull.
Closed head TBI requires diagnosis through study of the symptoms and behavior that follow the accident. For this reason, anyone having sustained a blow to the head or a whiplash-like injury should seek evaluation by a medical professional. Symptoms may be slight, invisible to the victim, but signs of more significant problems to come.
TBI can be serious, even life-threatening. TBI can result in irreversible brain damage. Paralysis, seizures, memory loss, blindness, impaired communication skills, and many other disabilities are possible. Symptoms may be obvious or subtle, immediate or delayed. TBI can profoundly affect quality of life.
